Cases Modernizing Tunnel Communications in the Leopold II Tunnel Renovation
As part of the large-scale renovation of the Leopold II Tunnel, Tein Technology plays a key role in upgrading critical communication infrastructure inside one of Brussels’ most important traffic arteries.
The overall project is led by Engie Fabricom, with Tein Technology responsible for implementing essential communication systems that support both daily operations and emergency response.
The objective: ensure safe, reliable and future-proof communication throughout the tunnel environment.

Reliable communication is the backbone of tunnel safety
Tunnel environments require highly resilient systems where failure is not an option. Every component, from operator communication to emergency response, depends on a stable and secure network.
Tein Technology’s scope focuses on three critical pillars:

Deployment of a rugged, high-performance IP network throughout the tunnel

Implementation of a VoIP-based emergency phone system

Installation of a public address and voice evacuation system
The new IP network forms the foundation of the entire setup. It is rolled out in phases, starting with the most critical technical rooms and key tunnel exits—ensuring that essential systems are prioritized from the outset.
A crucial design principle is the separation of networks: One branch supports operational technologies such as cameras, VoIP and public address systems. A second, independent branch is dedicated to the SCADA system, which controls vital infrastructure like lighting, pumps and power
This separation guarantees maximum reliability and continuity, even in high-risk scenarios.

Once completed, the upgraded systems will provide a robust communication backbone that enhances both operational efficiency and safety within the tunnel.
