Cases Centralizing Lock Operations Across Wallonia’s Waterways

The Service Public de Wallonie (SPW) is transforming its waterway infrastructure through a large-scale remote operations program.

The objective is clear: by 2035, 30 locks and one movable bridge will be centrally operated from the PEREX control centre in Namur, improving efficiency, safety and coordination across the entire network.

The first milestone has already been achieved with the lock of Salzinnes, located on the Basse-Sambre, becoming the first site to be operated remotely.

Managing locks locally limits scalability and operational flexibility. To address this, SPW is redesigning its entire approach, moving towards centralized control supported by connected infrastructure.

Tein Technology contributes to this transformation by equipping both the lock sites and the PEREX centre with integrated systems for communication, monitoring and security.

The scope includes:

  • Video and audio systems for real-time monitoring from both local sites and PEREX

  • Intercom and radio solutions for seamless communication

  • Smart detection systems, including boat detection and motion-based monitoring

  • Replacement of existing control systems and measurement equipment

  • Modernization of on-site infrastructure, including LED lighting and signaling

All systems are connected through a high-performance fiber network, ensuring reliable data exchange between the locks and the central control centre.

By centralizing operations, SPW significantly improves coordination, responsiveness and operational efficiency across its waterways.

Operators at the PEREX centre can monitor and control multiple sites in real time, while automated systems reduce manual intervention and streamline workflows.

The project also enhances safety and reliability, while enabling better maintenance planning and extended operational availability.

With an investment of over €23 million planned through 2035, SPW is building a future-proof infrastructure that supports more efficient inland navigation and contributes to more sustainable transport solutions.
